The Department of Microbiology at Gayatri vidya parishad college for Degree and P.G. Courses (A) was established in the year 2005 and inaugurated by Dr. B. Swamy, President, Gayatri Vidya Parishad.

The Department offers B.Sc. Honours (Microbiology) Major program with a maximum intake of 33. It also offers Microbiology and Food Science & Technology as Minors from the academic Year 2023-24.

Microbiology is the Applied branch of Biological Science in which the students are trained in the practical and theoretical Knowledge on Microorganisms, their Physiology & Metabolism and Economic importance of Microorganisms in various fields like Agriculture, Medical, Industrial and Environment. The students are given hands on training on latest technologies in Microbiology.

Major Focus areas are Microbial Diversity, Microbial and Molecular Techniques, Medical Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Environmental and Agricultural Microbiology, Food and Dairy Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Drug Design and Discovery

Scope: For Higher Studies

Students with background of Microbiology can pursue Post graduation in Microbiology/ Applied Microbiology / Industrial Microbiology/ Food and Environmental Microbiology / Immunology / Virology/ Diary Microbiology/ Molecular biology/ Food Science and Technology / Biochemistry/ Biotechnology in any State, Central Universities in India and Abroad
Student interested in teaching schools can pursue B. Ed. in Biology and English.

Employability: For Higher Studies Private sector jobs:

The Microbiology graduates are placed in different companies like Divis Laboratories Pvt. Ltd, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Life line Acqua Pvt. Ltd, Acqua Culture Labs, Vijaya and Visakha Dairy Pvt. Ltd. etc.

Public sector jobs:

Careers in organizations like FSSAI, FCI, CIFT, Food Safety Officers etc or eligible for any competitive examinations.

The importance of microorganisms has evolved in recent times, driven by their contrasting impacts on various sectors, where they exhibit both beneficial and potential threats. Consequently, the Microbiology course focuses on equipping students with essential knowledge to address societal challenges and harness the potential of microorganisms for the greater good.

The Department has qualified staff who render knowledge by their expertise teaching and mould students through effective mentorship. The Department is well equipped with Instruments and is committed to give hands on training to students during Practical Sessions. The departmental library provides students with access to a comprehensive range of reference books. The department strives to enrich the students by organizing events like Seminars, Guest lectures, Workshops, Student fests, Field visits and Industrial visits. Few of our students have been place in well reputed organizations like Dr. Reddy Laboratories, Divis Laboratories and Indian Immunological Ltd., etc.
